Classes and Programs

The Jack E. Kirksey Recreation Center offers an extensive line-up of fitness and health management classes and programs for any and all fitness levels. Enjoy the benefits of being a member and receive discounted prices on classes, personal training packages, massage, nutritional coaching and much more!

Check our Connections magazine for current class dates, times and prices. Most classes are 30-50 minutes in length and run for seven to eight weeks per session.

Effective Feb. 27, 2023, individuals who are not members will no longer receive cards, but will instead be checked in at the Express Membership Kiosk in order to gain access to the Recreation Center for their class or activity only.

Adult Group Fitness Class Descriptions

BLAST AND BURN CIRCUIT TRAINING

Do you want to have fun, burn calories, and increase your muscular endurance? Then blast and burn is for you! We will use rowers, ropes, TRX, kettlebells and various other equipment in a circuit format to give you an effective full-body workout. You will develop strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, and core stability in this action-packed class. All levels of fitness are welcome.

BARRE WORKOUT

A challenging, no-impact fat-burning workout that integrates the use of the ballet barre, light weights and various props. The focus will be on form and precision while performing small isometric movements for the core, arms, glutes, and thighs.

PILATES BARRE FUSION – NEW!

This class combines a pilates flow with the endurance and pace of a barre class. A challenging, low-impact and fast-paced strength training workout that will sculpt and condition the body. The focus will be on form and precision while performing small isometric movements for a full-body workout.

POWER CARDIO BARRE

This class combines your favorite traditional Barre moves with bouts of cardio intervals for a dynamic and effective total body workout.

BOOT CAMP FITNESS

This fast-paced boot camp-style class is a challenging and unique blend of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning, calisthenics, strength, and endurance training. Expect a full-body workout.

CARDIO STRENGTH FUSION

This class is designed to give you an action-packed 50 minutes of cardio drills and strength training. The cardio drills will be done every week. Upper- and lower-body strength training will alternate weekly. A variety of portable fitness equipment will be used.

CYCLE

Ride into high gear with this stationary cycle class.

CYCLE AND TONE

This class combines cardio cycle and body-tone work. Enjoy a ride followed by strength training. Class concludes with core work and a cool-down stretch.

CARDIO AND STRENGTH FOR FIFTY+

Low-impact cardio with full-body strength training for ages 50+. A variety of fitness equipment will be used to create a fun, challenging and interactive class experience. All levels of fitness are welcome.

EXPLORING STRENGTH EXPRESS – NEW!

This 30-minute class is designed to give you a challenging strength-based workout while using a variety of equipment. Perfect for anyone who has wondered what other options there are in the gym, or if you are short on time. This class contains no choreography; it involves a total-body workout with flexibility and core work included.

FIT AFTER FIFTY

This class is designed for ages 50+, who want to strength train. This class contains no choreography. The class will involve upper- and lower-body strength training. All levels of fitness are welcome.

FIT AFTER FIFTY BALANCE AND FLEXIBILITY

Balance and flexibility training will be the focus of this class for ages 50+. Use a variety of equipment to improve your balance, retain height, improve posture, strengthen your back, increase range of motion and improve bone density. This class is a great workout for both men and women. If you are worried about your balance or just getting up off your mat, the use of a chair will be available.

FIT AFTER SIXTY FIVE – FALL PREVENTION

This class is designed for ages 65+. Class will be centered around the unique needs of the active older adult who knows the importance of staying physically stable. Learn specific exercises that will decrease the risk of falling. Improve your stability with this class. The class will focus on upper and lower body strength training. All levels of fitness are welcome.

FIT MOM AND BABY

A 30-minute express class for moms of all fitness levels. This interval-based class incorporates cardio, strength, and core. Bring your baby, stroller and/or front carrier for this total body workout. Siblings are also invited to come play. Mom will be responsible for all children brought into class. Class is open to all participants, with or without a child.

KETTLEBELL CHALLENGE

A fast-paced boot camp-style class. Kettlebell, TRX, cardio and more combined to blast fat, gain muscle, improve balance and stability while increasing core strength and overall endurance along the way.

KETTLEBELL CONDITIONING

The kettlebell works both as a strength training exercise because of the weight, but is also a great cardio workout at the same time. Another benefit of utilizing a kettlebell program is that it is a huge time saver. If you are looking for an efficient, but very effective, workout in a short period of time, this kettlebell conditioning class is what you’re looking for.

MOBILITY AND STRETCH – NEW!

Unlock your body’s full potential with Mobility and Stretch, a low-impact class designed to improve flexibility, joint mobility and overall movement quality. This class combines gentle movements, deep stretching and breathwork to release tension, increase range of motion and support injury prevention. Class is perfect for all fitness levels, whether you’re an athlete or just starting your wellness journey, you’ll leave feeling looser, lighter and more aligned.

CARDIO SCULPT PILATES

This class delivers the strength, sculpting, and conditioning effects Pilates is known for, while adding a heart-rate boosting cardio and strength component. Cardio Pilates revs up calorie burn, multiplies results and improves cardio health. Perfect for those who want to get the benefit of cardio fat burning and body sculpting in one class.

RESTORATIVE PILATES

Restorative Pilates is a slower-paced workout that is ideal if you are suffering from back pain, osteoporosis, arthritis or rehabilitating an injury. This style of Pilates emphasizes body alignment, posture, and breathing, connecting movements with a calm, controlled flow. The moves focus on strengthening your core and improving general body mechanics, stability, and mobility.

MAT PILATES – NEW!

This class combines classic and contemporary Pilates exercises. Slow and controlled movements will work the whole body, focusing on strengthening the core. Please bring a mat.

POWER MAT PILATES

Whether you’re new to Pilates or a seasoned participant, Power Mat Pilates will deliver a great Pilates workout. This class features contemporary Pilates exercises performed on a mat, and spices up traditional Pilates workouts with the use of Pilates props such as the toning ball, stretch band and Pilates ring. Class is a fast-paced, intense workout that strengthens the core, tones the hips and thighs and flattens the abs.

PIYO

This class combines Pilates and yoga. Class includes a progressive series of flowing poses to enhance overall body strength and flexibility.

STRENGTH AND CORE

This class challenges the whole body. The class contains no choreography. Upper- and lower-body strength training will alternate weekly. Core work at the end of each class.

SHINE FITNESS – NEW!

Get ready to sweat, smile and shine! SHiNE Fitness is a high-energy dance fitness class that combines moves inspired by jazz, hip-hop and ballet set to upbeat pop music. This full-body workout is designed for all fitness levels and focuses on building strength, improving cardio endurance and boosting confidence one beat at a time.

STRONG

This class puts the entire body to the test. This class contains no choreography. The goal of the class is to improve muscular strength and endurance, as well as improving your cardio. You will strength train using a variety of fitness equipment targeting the core, upper and lower body.

TAI CHI 101

The slow and graceful movements of this modified Yang style are designed to strengthen the lower extremities, core muscles of the back and abdomen and improve balance, which can reduce the likelihood of falling. This style includes various degrees of turning, brief one-leg balancing and moving backwards. All levels of fitness are welcome.

TOTAL BODY FITNESS

A fantastic combination of cardio, core, upper/lower body strength conditioning and balance. A variety of weights, TRX suspension trainers, bosu balls, and medicine balls are some of the functional training equipment that is used. A light stretching segment is also included.

TRX CHALLENGE

Looking for a great way to start your weekend? Look no further. This class offers the unique experience of TRX suspension training along with some traditional calisthenics, power exercises and cardio drills designed to keep your heart rate up. You will be challenged in several ways with a variety of equipment. Come ready to be challenged and ready to sweat!

TRX CIRCUIT

Low impact body weight training utilizing TRX, medicine balls, dumbbells, kettlebells and other functional equipment. All levels of fitness are welcome. Drop-ins are welcome to participate.

TRX BOOT CAMP – NEW!

A class that combines TRX strength movements and class challenges that create a fun atmosphere while providing a fun and fulfilling workout.

WOMEN ON WEIGHTS

This class is designed for those who want a challenging strength training workout. This class contains no choreography. The class will involve upper- and lower-body strength-training exercises. Flexibility and core work is also included. All levels of fitness are welcome.

ZUMBA

Latin-inspired dance fitness class incorporating Latin/international music and dance moves. The cardio-based dance moves are easy to follow and fun. Come and enjoy the party!

BEGINNER YOGA

This class will emphasize classical yoga posture. The student moves at their own pace to develop focus, strength and flexibility. All levels of fitness are welcome, including beginners.

FITNESS YOGA

This class will challenge the yoga enthusiast. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques; improve energy, flexibility, and muscular strength through a well-chosen variety of yoga poses. Please bring a mat.

CANDLELIGHT YIN YOGA – NEW!

Ease into the evening with this peaceful and calming practice. You’ll be guided through postures with long holds designed to access deeper flexibility in both muscle and connective tissue. Allow the warm glow of the candlelight to help focus the mind inward and enjoy transitions with soothing vibrations of the sound bowl while you release stress and unwind tension. Please bring a blanket or towel.

MEDITATIVE YOGA

A slow, meditative yoga class. Modifications of poses will be taught so all skill levels can get the most from each pose. Poses are held for 3-5 minutes, mostly done sitting or lying down on the mat. End with a 5-10 minute guided meditation.

RELAXATION YOGA

This class will focus on comfortable poses designed to stretch the body and relax the mind. Great for unwinding after a long day or recovering from a difficult workout, this class will leave you feeling refreshed and rejuvenated in mind and body. Please bring a mat and a small pillow or blanket if desired. All fitness levels are welcome.

RESTORATIVE YOGA – NEW!

Yoga is a beneficial component of any cross-training routine, with restorative poses to enhance performance and prevent injury in whatever you do. In this class, we will focus on mobility circuits, followed by longer holds in Yin poses. The aim is to improve alignment and range of motion, which results in boosted performance.

SLOW FLOW YOGA

A slow flow-style class that focuses on breath and body awareness. Poses are held for 5-10 breaths. Class will start with warmups on the mat, move through standing sequences and end with cool-down stretches.

TOGETHER TIME YOGA – NEW!

This yoga class is perfect for caregivers and little ones ages 4 and younger. Connect, calm and support development with playful yoga and stories.

YOGA FLOW

This class combines strength, flexibility, and mental wellness by flowing through traditional Hatha yoga poses. All ability levels are welcome. Yoga mats will be provided.

YOGA + GUIDED MEDITATION

This unique class combines yoga and meditation. Experience classic yoga poses for the first half of class, then transition into guided meditation. Relax with affirmations, meditation, visualization, and breath work. Optional: Bring a mat and light blanket.

YOGA STRENGTH FUSION

This class will begin with a warm-up. It will then transition into light-weight training and end with challenging yoga postures. All ability levels are welcome. Please bring a mat.
