Check your pipes
CheckYourPipesLivonia.org offers an easy-to-use online map where you can enter your address to determine if your water service line material is known. If the material is not listed, you can schedule a free assessment with the City of Livonia Department of Public Works or submit an online self-survey. Simply visit the Water Service Line Material Map, input your address and take the next step toward ensuring your water system is up to date! Visit CheckYourPipesLivonia.org to learn more.
racer trust/grantland street/newburgh village
RACER Trust has been monitoring the groundwater plume in the vicinity of homes along Amrhein Road and Grantland Street. Please note that groundwater in this area is not a drinking water source; rather, drinking water for Livonia residents comes from the Great Lakes.
TCE, also known as trichloroethene, is a VOC best known for its use as a solvent for cleaning and degreasing metal parts. TCE has also been used as a paint stripper, adhesive solvent, as an ingredient in paints and varnishes, and in the manufacture of other organic chemicals. It is also found in some household products such as glues, scented candles, adhesives, spot removers, and rug cleaning liquids. Human exposure to TCE is most likely to occur from ingestion of water or breathing in vapors that contain TCE. While migration of sewer vapors into homes is possible, common household plumbing fixtures such as P-traps are designed to prevent sewer vapors from entering into homes. Learn about the potential health risks associated with TCE exposure.

ford/alden village monitoring project
While renovating the Livonia Transmission Plant (Plant), Ford Motor Company reported the discovery of chlorinated compounds in the groundwater to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE). Ford Motor Company investigated the contamination and determined one of these compounds, vinyl chloride, had migrated east of the plant in groundwater into the adjacent residential neighborhood. Ford Motor Company installed monitoring wells and soil gas wells around the plant and in the residential neighborhood in an effort to assess groundwater and soil gas conditions. In July of 2017, Ford Motor Company entered into a Consent Decree with EGLE. The Consent Decree requires Ford Motor Company to conduct investigations and remedial actions under a schedule while EGLE conducts formal regulatory oversight.
Groundwater in the area is shallow and EGLE required Ford Motor Company to install additional monitor wells screened at the top of the groundwater table to assess the potential risk to homes in the area for vapor intrusion. Some of these shallow wells have been installed and some are currently being installed. Results from some of these wells have identified a groundwater plume of vinyl chloride above site-specific volatilization to indoor air criteria. EGLE is requiring Ford Motor Company to install mitigation systems to address the residences within this groundwater plume on an expedited schedule.
Additional investigation and sampling of monitor wells continued throughout 2019.
Modeling from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has led Ford Motor Company to expand its investigation of potential contamination to the Country Homes Estates neighborhood to the south of the Livonia Transmission Plant. While there is no evidence of environmental impact in monitoring wells located near this area, beginning the week of June 14, 2021, Ford and its consultant Arcadis will install groundwater testing wells out of an abundance of caution. The test wells will be installed along Plymouth, Wayne and Farmington and near Parkdale, Laurel, Leon, Orangelawn and Hathaway streets.
